Safco 9417 is a smaller item than the one Amazon is showing here. Be sure you see a photo of it online before you order so you’ll know what you’re getting.

Assembly was very fast, though it had a lot of parts and easily could have been too challenging. All parts had labels which matched what was in the instructions….sooo ez to follow. It’s a fine product too. There’s not much to say about “how” to use it, if you see the picture and still don’t know how you’d use it, you’ve got bigger problems than making a purchasing decision.
What I will say is it has a nice balance of spacing-utility types and I think you have some options for personal preferences, but I just built what they suggested.
Gold medal to the instructions writeres.
Yesterday on NPR I heard Terry Gross interview lyricist Stephen Sondheim on the occasion of his 80th birthday. He said that like every artist he writes for one overriding purpose: to bring order to the chaos of human experience. If that’s true, I’d have to infer that each of us–even those of us who sit at a desk pushing pencils or using a keyboard–is at heart a creative artist.
None of our objets d’art attains perfection, but this Safco model comes an awfully lot closer than some of the other “desktop organizers” that I saw (and even ordered) on Amazon. Be aware that pictures can be highly misleading, and that an attractive, sturdy-looking organizer may turn out to be little more than a floppy cardboard box making your desk more disordered not to mention uninviting than ever. Look for the constituent material in the description. Also, check seller and price. And finally, compare prices of the same model in different colors.
I actually preferred white or grey, until I noticed that my preferred color would cost me an additional thirty percent. Also, I ordered directly from Amazon so there would be no questions about later communications, should they be necessary. Moreover, Amazon with Prime was the lowest priced model in the bunch (though now it appears you’ll have to wait longer to receive this item from Amazon–although sometimes, despite that qualifier, Amazon’s product has arrived more quickly than a sub-vendor’s).
Besides storing a few odds and ends, I’m looking for an organizer that will prevent items–staplers, pencils, thumb drives, even iPods–from slipping off the back end of my desk to behind the steam radiator (which requires me to use a mechanical extension grip to retrieve them). This one, at almost 30″ wide, will certainly limit by efforts to clean out the mess that accumulates behind my radiator, but you should be aware that Safco makes a wider model just like this–though at a proportionate increase in price.
I am happy with my choice. I use it for storage as I am short of space. It is so attractive, too.
The product is a beautiful wooden file tray. However, beware, the picture illustrates a double tray when in actuality you buy each piece separately! It is a good price even separately, but could cause a delay in getting organized and additional mailing costs when you have to re-order. You also have to order the pieces that hold up the stand and I haven’t been able to figure out how to do that yet.
