Is it wrong to think of public school this way? (This question requires you to think)?
Months ago, I published a bit of an essay about why I believe school is dumbing me down. I’ve edited my little rant based on the answers I received as well as how lengthy it was. Though I can’t guarantee that you’ll enjoy this question because it does require you to think, please feel free to answer. I’d like more opinions, thank you. (I am 15 years old, so please be respectful)School, I believe, is a waste of time. I honestly believe it is dumbing me down. Instead of opening new windows and doors to me, I feel as though it’s merely touching upon topics because it’s required. I personally hate going to school. I would rather be going out and researching topics that interest me rather than wasting away behind a desk in a ventilated room.Reading provides a way for people to understand opinions, sciences and processes, humanity and how far we’ve come, but when schools control what you read in class, what exactly are we learning? If I speak out in class with an opinion that does not agree with what the curriculum says (I say curriculum because teachers don’t teach, they simply follow desk Albert a list of topics), I’m not understanding the point and I’m leading the class off topic. The fact that I’ve examined an issue in a different perspective is not acknowledged, rather that I’m disrupting the class and I need to shut up before I get a detention. If we ask to read a different book that promotes similar themes or maybe different ideas as/than the required reading, we’re being picky and bratty, and it’s a horrible idea. Courses I might be interested in are unavailable to me because it’s only available for 11th and 12th graders. Albert Einstein was considered rude and academically challenged, and he quit school. He was even denied admittance to a Polytechnic school in Zurich. However he came up with the formula for energy and contributed to the Big Bang Theory. Einstein even said, “Education is what remains after one has forgotten everything he learned in school.” Einstein may have been a genius, but he was never BORN one. He taught himself, he studied things that interested him (as did Da Vinci). I’m not incapable of being a genius, and neither is any other student like me who wants to take hold of their education. Kids haven’t learned to clean up cuts from sitting in a room in school. They learned by falling down and scraping their knees. They learned by doing it. School just makes me sit and read, maybe once in a while there’d be an activity that makes me do something with the knowledge I’ve learned, and most of the time the topics are so bland and uninteresting that it’s not even worth the bother.Now, some argue that school gives children the opportunity to develop social skills. However, so do sports and volunteering. You don’t need school to become social. School puts you with other people, and you basically have to wade your own way through there. All you really need to do is put a child in a group of children his or her age, and give them something they can all do.I believe school teaches people to be obedient, to sit and to take orders. Do any of you remember what you force fed yourselves during high school?People have argued that school is free and I should be grateful for having it. Well to be honest, I am grateful for what school has taught me to believe, but just because it’s free doesn’t mean I should go ahead and take it. I’m not a freeloader and I’d rather not start now.
