Franklin Produts are known to be limited and cheaply made. I paid $25 for this product because it was originally listed close to $100 several months ago. However, I over paid for this product and should of gone with my gut and not of purchased it. The technology seems to be late 80’s and very basic. You can only find one word at a time and the dictionary is very small and worthless. I traveled to south america and gave up using this hunk of junk after 1 hour. Hard to see the screen, limited vocabulary, can’t understand the audio playback of the words, and you can’t form sentences. Good thing for me I was able to get online with my I-touch and use google translator which is free. I strongly sugguest you save your cash and use the free technology online to form sentences and translate real day activities. I will never use franklin products again, even if it was given to me. There must be a better portable product on the market because it would hard to find something this generic.

Literature is more than just words on paper. Anyone can simply write a few letters to form words onto paper, but what really makes literature, literature, (okay or not?) is the connection. This connection is the feeling you get when you read a piece of writing.. Most English mahogany novels give accurate descriptions of everything, and I mean everything. From the way the clouds are arranged in a clear unceasing blue sky, to the intricate pattern of the lines on the wood in a mahogany desk. These descriptions are what I believe make or break a piece of literature. Descriptions put you in the story, as your reading it you can see, hear, taste, and feel the parts of the story. If you read a story, and there are no events that fill you with feelings of anxiousness, or happiness, or any other emotion, then I would not consider that to be literature. You have to feel a connection, you have to be able to befriend the characters and see the world that the Author has portrayed in their writing.

I was expecting more vocabulary, but the one that comes with it is actually helpful, so I guess it’s ok. I think it’s a good product to have if it’s needed. The price is also good for the product itself.

I am a serious student of Spanish and I wouldn’t be without this very helpful tool. I speak a little Spanish but I’m not fully conversational. I have a Spanish speaking friend who speaks less English than I speak Spanish. This device has proven itself most invaluable in conversation between us.
Should and could be slightly smaller. It can be a very tight fit in the shirt pocket.
Too many features ie games. I’d rather have more words and phrases.
The font size and contrast are adjustable. Some reviews complain about difficulty reading.
No back light so you will need adequate lighting but no more than you would need to read anything else.
I get about 6 month out the batteries with frequent use. Takes 2 (cr2032) batteries/not that expensive. On Amazon for about $1.00 each.

As a previous reviewer noted you can’t look up England. Nor can you any proper name for that matter. This a serious oversight and has prompted me to change rating from 5 to 4 stars.

Packaging is so difficult to remove and the attachment for the cover is so delicate that the cover broke off from the body of the device when it was opened. Not recommended until packaging and design is changed.
There is no word that I have looked in here that I could find… NONE. It doesn’t even translates the word FROG! It is a really bad item

Couldn’t get any better translator than this unless it would be one to pronounce the words. Easy to use and small to carry.
this does not translate phrases – it only translates individual words. Has a databank of some random small phrases. nothing useful for me. I’m not traveling – just trying to learn daily spanish. not useful at all.
Defective product. I bought three translators and two were defective. The third translator, who still keep in my power present problems on the screen.
I know that I bought a cheap item, but I trust the quality of products previously purchased through Amazon.
It was definitely a bad buy and to this day I do not have a news of two translators who were returned: 05 – 27 2009.
I bought one of these a year ago and my mom wouldn’t share it with my dad. (They are both Colombian nationals and they recently moved to Canada) So they needed something portable that could help them with quick translations in English. Needless to say, my dad liked it so much I had to buy another one just for him. It has a voice feature that helps with the pronunciation of words and phrases. Nice product!
This translator is a total waste of money as it will only translate one word at a time, a $6.50 dictionary does a better job and my computer will translate complete items/phrases. This needs updating and improving. Very overpriced for what it does.
This BE1890 version has 4800 phrases which is better than the 1850 that has only 600 phrases. It has a lot of words in addition to the phrases. It translate English-to-Spanish and Spanish-to-English.
The synthetized voice is only fair quality but it does help a lot.
The product features are easy to use because they are intuitive.
I am glad I bought this product. I have a friend was has another less expensive model and she likes it. But I believe the most expensive model is better.
This little speaker/translator met my traveling needs very well. For its price you can’t beat it.
This dictionary software is adequate. I do a lot of reading while traveling and I frequently need access to an unabridged dictionary. It works fairly well and I leave it up on my laptop while reading a book. I have found some words where the word itself is used as the definition for that word. To my understanding that is a NO-NO for a dictionary, however, I did not find any competing unabridged dictionary software.
it helps me to understand some weird words scholars do employ in their articles in the fields of archaeology and egyptology, I’m fond of, before translating them (articles, not scholars) into french .
though I must look elsewhere, for articles are very technical, and numbers of terms don’t appear.

I own the OED. I own the Random House Unabridged. I own several collegiate dictionaries. I own the Franklin MW collegiate dictionary.
And I owned this dictionary. Then sold it. Why?
Because I thought I could do without it. But I cannot. Why?
Because the W3 is a most singular dictionary. It does not have proper names, so when compared to the Random House Unabridged, it looks scholarly. But it is readable and compact, so when compared to the OED (compact) it is easily read without a magnifying glass.
If you must had ONE dictionary in the house, and are torn between the OED and Random House Unabridged (the only contenders!) then you MUST choose the W3! It has only words (about 450,000) and it, combined with a good thesaurus (Synonym Finder by Rodale, e.g.) are the only 2 volumes you need on your desk, as you compose your treatises, letters, theses with pen and ink.
But if you are at a laptop composing your novel or treatise, I daresay that such a volume might seem unwieldy, in light of online dictionary/ thesauruses around.
But if you’re like me, you WANT the PAPER! And W3 delivers, as perhaps the only alternative to a volume you might choose to have if you were deserted on an island. That question, in itself, is interesting (” What book would you choose to be stranded with on a desert isle”). I’d have to answer the OED. But since that is technically not ONE book, I’d have to say the W3!.
I like to use this dictionary. It is not huge; but it is a large heavy English language dictionary which is easy to use. It has word roots, history and sentence examples using the word defined. It has updated words in the front of the dictionary. I would have liked to have a more recent update; but it has worked fine for me as it is. I am happy with this dictionary for the American English language.

I got tired of looking up words in my pocket dictionary, and not finding them. Maybe, I took a step too far in the other direction, but I’m finding all of the words now. This dictionary is great, with many interesting color pictures that catch your attention. The risk is, that I’ll set aside the book I was reading and start browsing this dictionary. Note that it is very heavy.

We had Reader’s Digest encyclopedic dictionary before but they no longer print one and ours was about 17 years old.
It fills our needs very well and it is cheaper than buying it in a book store.
This dictionary is too politically correct. It short-changes the great American leaders – minimizing their contributions, while going into great detail about other historical figures.
