Christians, how can I tell one of your brethren to put a cork in it, nicely (long)?
Sorry so long, I felt like I needed to provide a good background to get good answers in this case. Thanks for reading.I have a problem with this employee. He’s a devout Christian, which is fine. I don’t care what he does when he’s not at work. But he does not seem to realize that the office is not the place for Jesus. He has made nonsensical attacks on evolution, proclaimed the amorality of all atheists, even endorsed the opinion that a married woman should remain in the home. This last one he said with a perfectly straight face to me, his boss, who IS a married, working woman. No sense of irony in this man. He informs me that clients he likes have “the light of Jesus” in their hearts, and those he doesn’t like are atheists. He told me there are practising witches in the capital building and that FEMA will soon be putting us all in concentration camps because they want to stamp out Christianity. I think he may be a paranoid schizophrenic or something!All that aside, his actual work does get done, but slowly and inefficiently. (That frustrates me too. He has desk Nicely the simplest job in the office. A monkey could do it, but I have to explain everything to him over and over.) That I’m coaching him on, but the coaching has resulted in me spending more time with him, which has made the problem of his religion all the more apparent. I can’t have this in a work environment. I just had a complaint from another employee. She doesn’t want to attend staff meetings if he’ll be there because he makes her so uncomfortable. He’s alienating me and every one of his co-workers and creating an awkward environment. And he can’t take a hint. Anyone with basic social skills should have realized by now that these opinions are unwanted and unappreciated, but he continues as though he’s among others who embrace these ideas. So now I have to do something about it. I have to take him aside and explain to him why he needs to keep his beliefs to himself in a way that doesn’t make him feel alienated or doesn’t bring his self-righteous wrath down on me. He doesn’t know I’m an atheist, because I don’t want to find Jesus pamphlets on my desk every morning. Talking to him is bad enough when he thinks I’m a protestant too. I figured you guys would have the best advice on how to explain this to him. If someone (your boss in this case) had to tell you to shut up about your religion at work, how would you prefer to be told? He’s going to make trouble. He’s already expressed his belief that schools and workplaces would be better off with more Jesus. Plus, I’ve had to discipline him before and he does not take criticism well. How can I soften the blow?Thanks, guys! Unfortunately, firing someone at my organization is harder than climbing Mt Everest. His work is mediocre, but good enough. It’s mostly the environment he’s creating that I feel needs to stop. Luckily, his contact with coworkers is limited to me and one other person (and that one very rarely) besides staff meetings, so his harm has been limited by that so far. But, we’re expanding and he needs to be around his coworkers more and more often, so I want to make sure I nip this in the bud before I do lose my good employees.dancingdog, Jesus IS unwelcome in my workplace. What do you think of the 1st chapter of my story?
This is a very rough draft of the 1st chapter of my story. I would love to hear your thoughts. Any advice of tips would be appreciated. I prefer harsh criticism As I walk in the class, I feel the stare of everyone in the room. Their eyes bore into me, yet I feel completely unaffected, numb. The loud noise of my classmates is a buzzing in my ear. I hear the teacher introduce me.”Class, this is Eve Andrews, she will be joining us from now on.”Feeling the glares of my classmates as I walk past them to the only empty seat left in the room. I feel a distinctive hostility towards me. Several people stick their feet out in an effort to trip me on the way. A good kick in the shin to the first person, dissuades most of the rest from trying. Finally reaching my seat, I sit down and pull out the English textbook . A noise at my right catches my attention. “Hey”Ignoring, the unprompted greeting by shoving my ipod headphones in my ears, I cast my eyes to the front of the class, where the teacher has started the lesson. “Hey!”Seeing my classmates turn in my direction, I slouch down in my seat a little, wishing their attention could go back to the teacher. Wrapping myself further into desk Chair Cast my cocoon of numbness, a sudden grabbing of my arm, turns my head in the direction of the noise from before. “Hey, I’m talking to you.” As this unknown boy grips my arm tighter, I reach with my free hand to pull out my ear buds. Giving the boy, a quick appraisal I note that he is rather handsome — in his own way. He has slanted eyes that are the exact color of moss. He has long, luxurious, ebony hair. His physique, what I can see of it is rather lean, but at the same time quite muscular. He is wearing faded jeans that hug the muscles of his thighs, a pair of ratty sneakers, and a cropped, tight shirt. He must have gotten his overinflated ego from all the airheaded girls, who must flock to him. I look back down to where the boy has tightened his grip on my arm even more. If I let this continue I will start to lose feeling in my arm. I take the pencil that’s laying on my desk and jab it right into the meaty back part of his hand. Letting out a roar of pain the boy jumps up from his desk.”What’s, going on here!?”Seems like the teacher has finally clued in.”You know the punishment for fighting.”As if to back up his warning both mine and the unknown boy’s bracelets let off a small shock.The boy seemingly unaffected by the shock, remains standing, clenching his fists.I on the other hand not wanting another shock, turn to the boy, and off him a sweet smile.”Hi, I’m Eve, and you are? Seeming completely baffled by my sudden turn in attitude. The boy stares at me, him hands slowly unclenching. ” Your name,” I prompt him, flashing him another smile.”Uh, Damien” the boy says as he finally sits down in his chair. The teacher now seemingly satisfied that we weren’t going to kill each other, turns back to his lesson.”What was up with you before?” Damien asks as I’m about to put my headphones back on.Really no wanting to have to continue talking with this guy but knowing that he’ll probably cause another ruckus, I turn to him.”What,” I say lifting an eyebrow, my tone dripping with sarcasm ” You don’t like the way I ignore you.”Damien his face a mask of shocked disbelief gapes at me, very much like a fish left out of water too long.Turning back to the front and turning my ipod up full blast I think, great, he is supposedly to be one of the dangerous students that I was kidnapped to help control. Is This A Good Start To My Story?
I’m 14 years old and this is my first attempt at writing a story. Tell me if you like it or dislike, if I should change or add anything, and any other suggestions you may have:Chapter OneI knew it was my destiny. I’ve always known I was meant to be something more than just a princess. Ever since I saw them kill my mother I knew I was meant for greater things than dictating a kingdom. I can still see it happening. The same picture has darkened my dreams ever since that fateful day my mother was taken away from me. They moved with such swiftness only sharp eyes, like mine, could make out what was happening. These things, you could barley call them human. I had never seen a creature like them before and Liotilia was home to many a strange creature. Light blue tattoos swirled over of their tan bodies. The clothing they wore was pure black. Some faces were completely masked with black cloth, while others were hardly clothed. Most of the clothing separated the men from the women. Some men and women wore baggy ripped pants with rags wrapped around their arms. Most of the women wore baggy pants with a long skirt that only covered the front and back of their legs. The females had shiny black hair that perfectly matched their almond shaped eyes. Their long hair was either pulled back with a black leather strap or left flowing down their backs. The men had short spiked hair. A whole army of these strange creatures invaded our kingdom, when I was only three, but I still remember.I now know, they had been plotting their invasion for decades. We were completely oblivious of the danger that was slowly creeping toward us year after year. I remember watching them blend into the forest and then quickly invade the unsuspecting villagers. I remember seeing them attack our helpless subjects. Every slaughter was precise and quick. Only the corpse, lying mahogany Bookcase dead, could give you evidence to what had happened. That was how they were trained to kill. The only consolation I have now is that each death was mercifully quick and painless. I watched, too scared to move, from my chamber’s window. My keen eyes could see each move these warriors made. Only I could make out there swift and agile movements.The guards protecting the palace had no chance against the mysterious killers. As the strange beings took out the army of guards I saw only two flee through the large mahogany palace doors. My heart raced as I realized what was happening. Suddenly, I heard running footsteps. I could hear them getting closer. With each thud I heard, my heart skipped a beat. I remember the tears streaming down my face and I was shaking. Storming through my chamber door I was swept into the arms of my father, followed by my mother and five guards. “Tessandra! Tess, my darling-,” my mother choked. Holding my face in her hands, she kissed my forehead as tears escaped from her eyes. This was the last time she would ever touch me. The last time she would ever kiss me.The three of us shared a quick embrace before leaving my chambers. “King Aqtei we must get you to the tunnels!” The head guard whispered as we ran down the long hallway. I buried my face into my father’s red silk robes. When I lifted my head I saw one of the guards unlocking a door. I turned away, wrapping my arms around my father’s neck and looked down the long hallway. Something was following us. All I could see was a shadow moving swiftly along the edge of the walls. Not a tapestry rustled or gave evidence that it was coming. We rushed into the secret room and a guard hastily shut the door and locked it. Only I saw the black blur streak over the top of the entryway and steal away to the shadowy corner. I opened my mouth to let out a cry of warning, but it was only a weak whimper.“Shhh…” My father calmly soothed me as two guards pushed a bookcase against the wall, which revealed a staircase. The room was poorly lit. Only a small torch held by one of the guards lit the small room. It wasn’t enough to reveal my mother’s killer in the corner, concealed by a dark cloak.I stared at the shadow crouched in an almost feline-like position. It barred its perfect pearl white teeth at me, signaling to keep quiet. Fear overwhelmed me. The killer sprung from its hiding place and the dark hooded cloak slipped off revealing her long black hair. She cupped its hand around my mother’s mouth and held a silver blade inches from her throat. The fear flooded from me and a fire of fury burned in its place.“No, Mommy!” I screamed at the murderer. Her black eyes formed into slits of rage. She snarled in anger, because I had given her attack away. If I had not she would have slipped out of the room unnoticed. These creatures were so quick you almost couldn’t make out there movements, but my eyes were different from others. I never knew they possessed a greater power. The guards drew their swords and pointed them, but stopped as the strange being threateningly motioneIt cut off… i guess its too long. Well here’s the last paragraph:I instantly flickered to the memory of the killer’s black, soulless eyes and the fiery rage consumed my heart. I thought of those eyes every single day of my life. The eyes that tortured my people. Every moment I thought of my mother I could only see the shiny black eyes. The only memories I have of my mother are the moments before her death. This only fueled my desire. No one, not even my father, knew what I desired to be. I know it’s wrong. I know that I shouldn’t want this so badly, but I can’t help myself. What I want, more than anything in the world, is to become what killed my mother. I want to be a warrior.
